Behind the Painted Face.

Ever since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated with Chinese opera. I remember I was only two years old when my grandma carried me in her arms and brought me to watch my first Teochew opera performance. I called it "Tok tok cheng" at that time cause that was usually the basic beat of the drums and gong.
My childhood dream was to be an opera actor. Although my parents opposed of it, that didn't stop me from persuing my dream. When I was 13, I even ran away from home during the school holidays to join an opera troupe in their performances. We travelled from places to places in Singapore and although living conditions was cramp and bad, that was actually one of the best experiences in my life.
Even till this day, I'm still someone who believes in having dreams. "Turning fantasy into reality". That's my motto in life!

The photographs you see here were taken recently when a Thailand Teochew opera troupe performed in Singapore. It was like relishing my childhood once again. 画上脸谱, 穿上戏服, 仿佛回到了童年。

I remember watching lots of Teochew operas with my granny as well. It was indeed very fascinating. All the colors on the face and clothes... Somehow, just captured my attention, even up till today, when I do chance upon operas performed in temples or during the 7th month, I do stop for a while to watch a bit. Reading your posts just brought back memories...

No wonder you like the show "Painted Faces". Probably struck a chord with you. While I hope they never make a sequel (the ending was triumphantly satisfying and open-ended), it would be cool if you did a show about or related to opera.
